World Marriage Day originated in Baton Rouge during the winter of 1981. It was created by conservative groups alarmed at escalating divorce rates and the first rumblings of gay marriage. They successfully petitioned the Mayor, state Governor and the Catholic Bishop to proclaim St. Valentines Day as 'We Believe in Marriage Day’, marriage between a man and woman being one of the seven holy sacraments.
By 1982, 43 State Governors officially proclaimed the day and celebrations spread to U.S. military bases in several foreign countries. Beginning in 1983, the name was changed to """"World Marriage Day"""", and it is celebrated on the second Sunday in February.
In 1993, his Holiness, Pope John Paul II, imparted his Apostolic Blessings on World Marriage Day. WMD celebrations continue to grow and spread to more countries and faith expressions every year.
Though the event originated with Christians, it is celebrated by people of all faiths worldwide and with the increasing proliferation and approval of homosexual unions globally, non-traditional married couples.
